  • Very strange though because it wasn't immediate and in an attempt to correct, I restarted a couple of times and the time that it took to lock up was different and

Your problem should be solved.

It should look like a tiny touchpad with a diagonal line through it (it may be Fn + F5, Fn + F6 or something else entirely). Now though with this CTL + F5 information it will be much quicker for me.
